In this comparative essay I will be looking at the difference in the One Show documentary, which is a report about badger and whether they should be culled or if there is another way of getting rid of them. I will be comparing it to Sunday, which is about people point of view on Sunday and how it should be spent. 

The report would mainly target those who are affected by either the culling of badgers or those who have a problem with the badgers having TB. The age range for the report would be males and females aged between 35-45 this is because the topic has more of a relevance to them. 

The report on badgers looks into whether the government should look into the decision of culling the badgers in the UK because due to the outburst of TB. The show has a biased opinion as it only has a professional spokesman from the wildlife trust who argues that is wrong to cull the badgers as only a minor amount are affected. The farmers in certain areas of the UK are currently using a process of whereby they would catch the badgers and vaccinate them by doing this the badgers can continue to live and would not have to be killed.     

In the documentary there are many conventions been used one of which is the biased opinion as there is only a professional that’s against culling the badgers and we don’t hear from anyone who is for the culling to go ahead

In this report there are many cutaways when the speaker are talking each cut away relates to what they are talking about depending on the subject such as when they mention cattle there would be a cutaway of the cattle this enables the viewer to have more of an interest as they are able to see what the presenter is referring to.  

Another convention in this report is the use of voice over as when the cutaways are player the audience is still able to hear the person speaking.

The average shot length in the report was from 4-6 seconds this is because it’s important that the viewer

See’s change as it keeps them interested and brains thinking. 

In comparison to the one show 'Sunday' is a documentary that talks about three peoples opinions of Sunday. Jim who has been running his candlelight ballroom dances for 21 years, Colin who is an MG enthusiast who likes nothing more than to get out onto the open road on a Sunday afternoon, and David who thinks Sundays 

should be banned.

The target audience for this documentary would be for middle-aged adult as they would be more interested in the content and argument.

The mode of address of this documentary is unbiased as we have both for and against Sunday. It’s also documenting an aspect of reality as they are talking about something that relates to everyone.     

In the documentary the first few shots are talking about David’s point of view and how he does not like Sunday’s it then skips to Jim who loves Sunday’s as he is able to enjoy the day having a rest and ballroom dancing. The shot then turns back to David and he explains more about why he does not like Sundays and this likes to the things that David likes to do. We the audience is then introduced to Colin who also enjoys the peaceful time he has on Sunday as he is able to get into his car and have a drive around the country side.  

There are many conventions in this documentary one of them is the direct mode of address as all three speakers are talking directly to us. It consist of different points of view and therefore is non-biased. The documentary has many cut always when Jim talks about his love for Sundays as he is able to ballroom dance the audience see a cut away showing him at a ballroom dance. 

The average shot length in this report is from 3-4 this is important, as the audience like to see a change to keep them interested. The shots are not only short they also cut to all three points of views.

In conclusion both documentary have many things that are in common however the style and content is different. The badger’s documentary is more conventional as there is a presenter that introduce and follow the topic. However is biased were as the Sunday documentary is less conventional and has both arguments.
